Helen Reinhold Art
My work exemplifies all the loves in my life. Nature, landscapes, people and their quirky ways, florals showing off in a vase. I like to play with subject matter and tell a story with mark making and using varied paints. Sometimes the attracted scene requires thin paint and at other times only a thick creamy impasto will do. My brushwork and palette knife slapdashery work to tell the story.
Most frequently, my brush meets panel to capture some aspect of the natural world, be it a vast field spreading before me, or an individual flower from my tangled garden. Coming to nature offers escape from the constant movement of daily life to a place of serenity where I can simply be present. I find solace in the constant renewal found in nature; the gentle assurance found in exhaustion and rebirth.
Recently, my journey has been toward more utilization of subdued tones in order to allow bursts of color to take center stage. Past works have rollicked in fiery expressions of color. Part of my growth has involved learning to tame and channel that passionate strength into a more focused and cohesive image. As I mature as a person, it is reflected in my work.
The greatest lessons painting has taught me come from my seeming “failures,” which I experience on a regular basis. In reality, these so-called mistakes, through patience and persistence, often become the best veering for growth. It is in stepping over my doubts and fears to try something new, something strange, something uncomfortable.
Through the ever-present need to master new techniques, it is the spiritual reward that drives continued creation. I look forward to stumbling upon more of those sacred spaces calling out to be painted.
